What is medication management?

Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and Scottsdale psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners of psychopharmacology provide medication management and assessments. This can all sound daunting for someone who has never taken medication, so let’s explain exactly what that means. Many people are not sure if medication is the best option for their mental health symptoms. Psychiatric evaluations by a compassionate, well-informed practitioner can really help ease worry and concerns. When things are explained clearly and honestly, we are much more likely to be open with our provider.

Why is medication management necessary?

Every patient is unique and will react to medication differently. Additionally, each medication prescribed poses a risk of certain side effects and complications, and they can also interact with each other, leading to potentially serious problems for the patient. Medication management reduces the patient’s risk of dealing with these issues.

Another important role of ongoing medication management involves ensuring that patients continue to take the medications they need. Patients with mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder, need to continue taking their medication to manage symptoms and prevent setbacks. If patients skip the medication they need, they are more likely to experience severe symptoms related to their disorder.

How do I find out if I need medication?

We Perform a Psychiatric Evaluation

We are physical beings. Similar to needing to go to the doctor to get a physical, it’s also important to get evaluations from time-to-time for our mental health. During a psychiatric evaluation, Erin will look at both mind and body symptoms to treat you as a whole person. We want to really understand your concerns and what types of symptoms are bothering you. Some reasons you may consider medication might be for anxiety, depression, ADHD, ADD, mood disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Eating Disorders, among others.

After the initial assessment, Erin will walk you through a treatment plan designed with your specific needs in mind. If it is in the client’s best interest to try psychiatric medication, then Erin will then walk you through it. Specifically, the medication’s effects, potential side-effects, usage and course of treatment will be discussed. Moreover, together with Erin, you will decide if she expects to start you on a small dosage and then build from there or use other medications in conjunction with it.

If the client agrees with this treatment plan, this medication is prescribed for a small amount of time as a trial period to see how effective it is. After that, Mesa Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Erin Jones of Revival Psychiatry will monitor the medication’s effectiveness over time and consistently update treatment plans. If the treatment is successful so far, Erin will keep them the same as long as they meet the client’s goals.

Every person is unique. There is usually some experimentation time for every course of treatment. The effectiveness of each treatment varies from person-to-person. We recommend that clients who seek psychiatric medication management for mental health purposes also work with a therapist. Revival Psychiatry can provide you with a trusted Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Tempe, Mesa, and Paradise Valley Counselor, Therapist and Mental Health Provider referral. Although it’s not a requirement, having someone that you can trust and connect with will help with holistic healing.

How often should patients on medication see their psychiatric provider?

Patients who take medication for a mental disorder should make an appointment with Revival Psychiatry in Mesa, Arizona whenever they need to refill their prescription. Patients should also make an appointment to see their provider if they begin experiencing worrisome side effects or symptoms related to their medication. Also, if patients feel that their current dosage is not as effective as it needs to be, they should contact Revival  Psychiatry for an appointment.

How can patients improve the effectiveness of their medication?

Patients can improve the effectiveness of the medications they take by taking only the recommended dosage. Patients should take their medications at the same time every day. They should also follow all of the treatment instructions, and  attend all recommended therapy sessions with your counselor or therapist..

If patients feel that their medicine is not as effective as it should be, they should never try to adjust the dosage on their own. Taking too much or too little medication can be dangerous. Patients should always contact Erin Jones, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with Revival Psychiatry, for guidance before making any changes.
