Anxiety Q&A

What are some different types of anxiety disorders?

Anxiety is a normal part of life and is the fuel behind your “fight or flight” response. Without anxiety, humankind could not survive. A problem arises, however, when anxiety moves beyond the stage of an initial reaction to a potentially dangerous situation and becomes part of everyday life.

Anxiety can manifest in a number of different ways. One of the most common is called generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is marked by a pervasive sense of stress and worry.

Some additional types of anxiety disorders include:

  • Panic disorder, causing acute panic attacks

  • Selective mutism, or failure to speak in certain situations

  • Separation anxiety disorder, or distress when separated from parents or caregivers

  • Agoraphobia, or fear of public spaces

  • Specific phobias like fear of spiders or heights

These are just some of the examples of anxiety disorders.

How can anxiety affect my life?

People who experience anxiety can struggle in numerous ways. Some are so overwhelmed by their symptoms that they can’t hold down a job or maintain relationships. Others are simply plagued by persistent worries and fears that color virtually every aspect of their days.

Anxiety can also cause sleep disruption. Many people report insomnia in addition to other symptoms of anxiety. Failing to get enough restful sleep can further complicate anxiety symptoms. For many, this cycle can feel like an uncontrollable nightmare they cannot escape.

Can medication help me manage my anxiety?

There are several ways to manage anxiety. Many people benefit from therapy, which can help you explore the source of anxiety and identify the triggers that make your symptoms more pronounced. Therapy can also help by exposing you to triggers in a safe and monitored environment, helping you build tolerance.

Medication is a good fit for some people who struggle with anxiety. This is especially true in cases where symptoms prevent you from living a fulfilling and stable life. Drug therapy carries a risk of side effects, but for many, the improvements made possible through medication far outweigh the risks.
